Compost plans debated

Published on 22nd March 2007 in News

Community composting could become a possibility in Snaith after the town council received a visit from East Riding of Yorkshire Council's (ERYC) new composting officer earlier this week.

Steve Hall attended Monday's meeting of Snaith and Cowick Town Council to educate councillors on community composting schemes, in which residents' green waste is collected and composted in their locality.

ERYC is currently offering funding for new groups to start up community composting schemes, and will pay up to £75 per tonne of green waste composted.

Steve said: "Community composting can involve all areas of the community - from people with learning difficulties to young offenders, and even members of the community who just want to help can get involved.

"It doesn't necessarily have to be the town council that sets up this scheme, other groups can be set up to do so."

Cllr Richard Bridge commented: "I feel we have a duty as a town council to encourage this. We definitely need to explore every avenue available."
