Crisis meeting over bad state of street

Cllrs Mally Boatman and Simon Fraser make important plans for Montague Street.
A Goole road dubbed the 'worst street in town' because of its poor road surface could be re-vamped within the next few months after East Riding councillors and officials held a crisis meeting last week.
Goole and East Riding councillor Mally Boatman has been campaigning for work to be carried out to Montague Street for more than three years, claiming that its potholes and general uneven surface make it the worst council-maintained street in Goole. Following a site visit on Friday, March 9, it has now been announced that repairs could be carried as early as April.
"I think the road surfacing in Montague Street makes it the worst adopted street in Goole, and I have been trying to get it sorted for three years," said Cllr Mally Boatman.
"There are potholes down most streets in Goole, but this street is particularly bad because there are potholes along the full length of the road."
East Riding councillor Simon Fraser, ERYC portfolio holder for Streetscene services, and John Harland, north divisional manager for ERYC's Highways services, visited Montague Street with Cllr Boatman last week and decided that drastic action needed to be taken.
John Harland told the Goole Times that some areas of the road were so sunken that drivers had complained that they were hitting their car doors on the pavement when trying to get out of their vehicles. Mr Harland said that plans to raise or lower the footway to prevent this had been discussed and could be a possibility for the future, but were 'not likely to come to fruition' at present.
Cllr Simon Fraser added: "This could be a major scheme as repairs to the fundamental road structure are needed. The footways are in good order, but we need to tidy up the tarmac on the road.
"Cllr Boatman has been pressing for Montague Street to be repaired for quite some time. There are lots of adopted roads like this around the county but you can't get round it easily. You just have to bite off what you can."
Cllr Boatman added: "Repairs will hopefully be carried out in the next financial year. There could be a minor inconvenience if the road is closed for a few days whilst maintenance work is carried out, but I think it will be worth it in the long run."
