A mountain of rubbish - from less than a mile of road.

A volunteer who helped clear up a section of road in Snaith on Sunday morning was amazed to find a tin of snuff, two cds and two empty boxes of Viagra among the litter.

Richard Wales, of Court Gardens, Snaith, picked up the items from the verge between the Jaguar Garage in Snaith and East Cowick Church.

Also in his haul were 20 glass bottles, 115 tins - mainly beer cans, and no less than 159 plastic bottles.

"Given that I only covered one side of the road, that is nearly 300 recyclable items from what in effect was just half a mile of highway," said Mr Wales.

"You have to applaud the Snaith and Cowick Together group for regularly clearing our local roadsides but it just should not be necessary.

"Where on earth as a nation have we gone wrong?" he asked.
