Council tax hike branded 'shocking'

Council-tax payers will see their bills rise by 3.8 per cent from April after the East Riding of Yorkshire Council agreed a budget aimed at improving social care last Thursday.
Four and a half million pounds more will be spent on care for adults and children in a budget which will see people in a Band C property pay 69p more a week and £36.09 a year.
A spokesperson for the ERYC said the budget protects their capital spending project, which pays for major building projects such as the refurbishment of Vermuyden School.
He also pointed out the ERYC also receives less than the average amount of funding from the Government.
However, the Liberal Democrats have called the rise a 'council-tax shocker' and Cllr David Nolan said: "We proposed a 2.4 per cent increase because we believe this was fairer to residents and particularly pensioners and those on a low income."
