Former prisoner seeks details on PoW camp
Published on 1st February 2007 in News
A former German prisoner of war who worked on farms near Goole after the second world war is appealing for help to fill in a hole in his memorabilia.
Herbert Heinemann has contacted the Goole Times to ask if any of our readers has any photographs, newspaper cuttings or other information about the PoW camp off Mariner's Street in Goole and at Bellasize, near Eastrington.
Herr Heineman was in the camps from February 10 to March 19 and June 14 to June 28 in 1946, when he was 18.
He wrote: "I have many fond memories of the people of Yorkshire and the kindnesses that were shown to me all those years ago - something I have never, ever forgotten.
"Despite numerous searches through archives such as the Imperial War Museum, I can find no photographs, paper cuttings or any kind of information about the PoW camps at Goole and the one at Bellasize.
"Whilst I appreciate that this was a long time ago, maybe someone has some photos and memories that they would like to share. Maybe the lorry drivers who took us to farms will be able to remember.
"I shall of course be pleased to pay any expenses incurred."
Herr Heinemann can be contacted at: Hopfelder Str. 13, 37235 Hessisch Lichtenau, Germany.
