Local knowledge 'invaluable' for events success
Howden's transport links will be the theme of this year's heritage weekend and organisers are hoping that local knowledge will make it a special success.
It was agreed at a meeting that the town's development over the last 20 years has relied very much on its connections by water, land, rail and air and the event will be focused around these four elements:
Water
l Dainage: Making the land viable, land drainage from Saxon times, warping, wind pump.
l Travel: Ferries and ferry crossings, Boothferry Bridge, the Humber Bridge, navigation of the Humber and Derwent, international trade.
Land
l Old roads and highways, stagecoaches with hostelries and coaching inns, the famous horse fair, the advent of the motor car and motorways.
Rail
l The Hull and Barnsley line and L.N.E.R. (now G.N.E.R.) with the development of the Hull – London service.
Air
l Airships and airfields, international names associated with the area, Nevil Shute and Barnes Wallis; connections with the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington.
l Future developments through Humberside and Doncaster airports, making national and international access easier.
Organisers are hoping to stage a variety of exhibitions in the Shire Hall and to organise rallies in the area. The provisional dates are September 8 and 9.
Avory Brown, heritage weekend co-ordinator, said: "As well as contacting outside agencies, we know that we have local residents with a wealth of knowledge and special interest in many of these areas who would be invaluable to us.
"So, we are very anxious to invite you to join us at our meeting to be held in the Shire Hall on Thursday, February 8 at 7.30pm.
"We are sure that with your knowledge and participation in this venture we could lift our event into something really special, putting Howden well and truly on the tourist map with an exciting event to look forward to in the late summer.
"Please do come along and join us. Any contributions or ideas you can give us will be very welcome.
"We are anxious to involve as many people as possible in making this an interesting event."
