High cost of heating

Published on 13th November 2008 in Letters

Sir - I refer to the letter 'High cost of heating', from W. Haigh, in the Goole Times of October 23. I can identify with each point made in the letter.

I have storage heaters which are warm when I leave the house in the morning and are cold when I return in the evening.

My immersion heater is fitted with a short-reach element, which heats only the top part of the cylinder. This is quickly gone when you fill the bath.

Any hot water required later for washing, cleaning or laundry has to be heated in the day, using full-price electricity.

Gas is in the street and half of the council bungalows; houses in the row have had their storage heaters removed and replaced with gas heating and hot-water supply.

When I applied for rent rebate/reduced council tax, I was advised that I did not qualify. I was referred to Bridlington for assistance with revised heating on health grounds. However, I am not disabled enough for the East Riding of Yorkshire Council to connect gas to my rented pensioner's bungalow to serve gas heating and hot water, which would be more flexible than the storage heaters and immersion heater.

I shall add my voice to that of W. Haigh and request reconsideration from ERYC.
