'Utter disgrace' of pay rises

Published on 13th November 2008 in Letters

Sir - The Goole Branch Labour Party would like to voice our disgust and outrage at the decision to award huge pay increases to the East Riding Council hierarchy.

These proposals come at a time of economic difficulties, when Goole people and many around the country are feeling the squeeze.

It is also hypocritical of the Council to propose such increases when they have proposed and voted for cuts in services such as the fire service.

This Tory council has spent thousands of pounds on free lunches and drinks at the opening of the Bridlington Spa and now this - when at the same time they are cutting budgets for vital services and putting pay restraints on low-paid ERYC employees.

It is typical of a Tory council to operate in this way and we in Goole must ensure that we strongly object to these proposals, which you can do by either writing to your local East Riding Labour councillors Pat O'Neil or Keith Moore, or any of the Labour town councillors.

This episode sends out a clear message that the Tories do not support hard-working families but instead reward those who cut services for them. It's a disgrace and shows utter contempt to the people the council serves.
