Calling all Goole AFC supporters

Published on 4th September 2008 in Letters

Sir -

At the end of Saturday's F.A. Cup game I was approached by a local supporter who said, "how you can ask people to come and watch us play after seeing us lose by four goals to nil I don't know". I kept quiet for a moment and then said very quietly, "I know what you mean".

He was referring to my letter to your newspaper last week. Then I thought about this for a couple of days and I just thought, it is true, we have just seen Goole kicked out of the F.A. Cup by a team that played better than us on the day, but it will not stop any of the supporters who regularly visit the Victoria Pleasure Grounds from turning up this Saturday to watch our next league encounter, just as I will.

The reason for this is that we all support Goole A.F.C. with a passion. We were all gutted at five o'clock on Saturday evening and for many of us that lasted into Sunday when eventually the bad feeling started to subside and we started to look forward to the league and the next cup that is around the corner and we have to remember that it is that passion that will make the next victory seem that little bit better.

But as Goole A.F.C. supporters we have more to look forward to than just what is happening on the pitch. The chairman has thought up with the idea of launching a Goole Veterans side and is in the process of arranging a number of other veteran sides to visit the Pleasure Grounds. First up will be Hull City veterans on the 28th September and there will be plenty of people who will relish the chance to watch some of the Hull City greats with their boots on again. Another good night will be a Chairman and Manager's night which is scheduled for tonight (Thursday 4th September) in the V.P.G. bar, when do fans get a chance to have an evening with the guys in charge and can ask whatever questions they like. I am sure, not many.

Goole may not be having the best time of it on the park but off it we are lucky that we have a chairman who is motivated up to the ears and is looking for ways to move this club of ours forward and is surrounded by people who are similarly enthused. When you see this in action around the V.P.G. on a matchday then you can only feel proud to be supporting a club that does not have things easy but has the people there that can take it forward.

For that reason alone I am calling all Goole people to support your local club and come down to the V.P.G. this Saturday for some exciting live football.
