Sir - On arriving back from holiday I got off the plane covered from neck to toe in itchy spots. They were not there when I got on the plane.

I contacted the health centre and was given an appointment. I told the doctor there what had happened and he said not to worry, they were not contagious and there was no reason to stay away from elderly relatives. He asked if I had been around cats. He never got out of the chair to look at the spots.

Two days later I was so worried that I went to see a doctor at Goole hospital and was told that I had chicken pox and must not go near anyone who is pregnant and not to touch the very elderly.

Too late - I had already had contact with my mother-in-law.

I can't believe a fully-trained doctor could not diagnose chicken pox. Maybe he could do if he had taken the trouble to look properly. The sooner the government brings out the performance tables, the better for us.
