Town needs promoting

Published on 21st August 2008 in Letters

Sir - We left Goole in 1998 to settle on the East coast, but have returned to the town on many occasions since.

Recently we decided - very much on the spur of the moment - to make another visit, our first in perhaps 12 months or so. As we have always done, we parked in the 'Pay and Display' near Boyes and Peacocks stores. Not cheap, but very handy and plenty of spaces.

We were shocked to find that the 'old' indoor market was closed and would never return to the previous format. Nevertheless, we went into the Victorian Market and managed to find almost everything we were looking for.

However, on speaking to one or two of the stall-holders we sensed an air of despondency, mainly due to a fall-off in trade since the old market was closed.

Yes, OK, many of the traders have re-located to the Victorian Market and that now has a good buzz about it. But the town had that 'closed' feeling and we feel that more could be done to advertise the fact that Goole is still very much alive and well. Those - like us - coming in to shop from out of town, need to know that really nothing has really changed.

The town remains one of the most compact shopping centres in East Yorkshire and we send best wishes to the wonderful variety of traders and businesses in Goole. We''l be back soon, now that we know you're all still around.
