Impatient drivers a danger to children

Published on 7th August 2008 in Letters

Sir - At about noon on Monday I was with my grandchildren aged five and 12 years on Boothferry Road. The traffic was at a standstill and drivers were waiting to turn into and out of Tesco's.

We wanted to cross the road at Sainsburys, so I pressed the button for the lights to change. A young gentleman crossed the road before the lights changed but I told my grandchildren it was not right, as the little green man was not up and I am trying to teach my youngest grandchild the Green Cross Code.

The green man lit up so I said we can cross now, but one impatient driver at the front of the queue decided to go through the red light just about a foot away from my granddaughter - only to park in the lay-by in front of Sainsburys. What was the rush for that I do not know.

I shouted at him and asked him what he thought he was doing going through a red light. He just said "Sorry, I should not have done that," so to that driver I am saying 'No, you should not. How can I teach children to cross the road if idiots like you go through a red light?"

You know who you are and if you have grandchildren I hope this never happens to them.

A red light means stop, people crossing. I think that driver needs to learn his Green Cross Code.
