Animal behaviour in back lane causes disgust

Published on 7th August 2008 in Letters

Sir - Through the pages of the Goole Times we'd like to offer a challenge to all dog owners and one particular young man.

As residents of Humber Street we are used to seeing dozens of dog walkers passing our door each day on their way to 'empty' their animals on the public riverbanks. Sadly, many of the dogs (and people, if you read on) don't make it that far. The result is a collection of dog muck on the back lane. It's disgusting - and we are dog owners!

On the night of Wednesday, July 30, a young man and his girlfriend, perhaps 18, were in Humber Street's back lane. Being without a dog they shouldn't get a mention here, but they do.

This fair-haired young man, wearing pale clothes, does get a mention as he appears to think he is a dog. He defecated in the street!

When challenged by three residents he claimed to be drunk. No excuse! He wasn't drunk at all, as he tried to hide his action by squatting behind a car while his girlfriend lay in the street nearby.

Not apologetic, he walked away in a perfectly straight line, looking sober.

Our challenge is simple. Would any dog-walker like to tell us why they don't bother cleaning up after their animal? We dare them to include their names and addresses - as we know they won't.

Our other challenge involves the young man and his girlfriend. Write in and apologise, especially to the car owner who had to clean up after you to get to her car door. Or perhaps get your mum to write in - we are sure you are man enough to have told her what you did!

Finally, to all Goole residents, we offer another challenge. Please tell other residents this letter's content. Let us all make sure this young man cannot avoid knowing about it. He can have no excuse not to write in and by shaming him into not showing off about his actions we can at least hope this behaviour doesn't become normal among the young.
