New-homes plans for Goole streets

Published on 24th July 2008 in Letters

Sir - I would like to respond to potentially misleading comments made in letters in last week's Goole Times regarding East Riding of Yorkshire Council's redevelopment plans for the Phoenix Street and Richard Cooper Street area of Goole.

The need to redevelop the area was identified four years ago when a detailed assessment, carried out by independent consultants working on behalf of the council showed that it had become a hot spot from crime, anti-social behaviour and other problems, and that many of the properties were already boarded up. The streets were deemed unsustainable and plans for them to be redeveloped, along with adjoining land that was formerly the site of the Adelphi warehouse, were then agreed by the council.

This process is now at an advanced stage as the council and its partners have acquired more than 90 per cent of the properties on the two streets. All of the owner-occupiers voluntarily accepted the offer made to them and have already moved on to better housing elsewhere. The remaining properties are owned by a small group of private landlords.

The council is now seeking expressions of interest from developers interested in helping to transform the area by creating a range of new, quality homes in attractive surroundings.
