Sir - Regarding Paul Thompson's letter "The rubbish that our kids eat" (Readers' Page, last week).

I remember the shipyard siren and I also remember seeing all the bikes outside the Dockers' Club during the dinner hour. Obviously they must have been getting a very balanced diet in there. The kids come out of school and descend on the town because the school dinners obviously are not what some kids want.

So, thinking on, they have only three-quarters of an hour to get from school, get lunch and walk back, so they have to find something quick. Also I do not sit in front of the television all day watching Loose Women. I probably speak for a lot of parents on that one.

If you feel so bad about the diets of these youngsters, stand outside Vermuyden with a box of apples and give 'em all one as they come out. I bet you wouldn't be there long.

P.S. By the way, my son informed me that he got tuna pasta for his dinner. Is that okay, Mr Thompson?
