Up to dog owners to act responsibly
Sir - With reference to the letter entitled 'Dog owners to blame for mess', I am truly saddened that people feel that they are no longer able to enjoy walks in our beautiful village of Reedness.
It is indeed an appalling situation when dog owners do not clean up after their dogs. As a dog owner myself I have always been keenly aware of the need to clean up after your dog; it is simply not acceptable to inflict your dog mess on other people. I agree that the problem was virtually non-existent in Reedness up until approximately 12 months ago. I agree with the point raised by D. Golby that "the appearance of the messes coincides with the arrival of some dog owners in the village, so it is reasonable to connect the two events.".
I personally do not dog-walk on the riverside any more because of the dog foul. I am shamed because essentially the finger of blame points towards dog owners in general and I feel that we are all being 'tarred with the same brush'. I would hope that the persons responsible for the mess start to take note and put some effort into becoming good, responsible dog owners.
If you own a dog you are accountable for everything that it does. If owners do not take this responsibility seriously, then at some point they will be at the receiving end of a fine and/or legal action.
