The brothers Mark and Jamie Shipp made their 2008 bow for Goole Cricket Club on Saturday and steered their side to a comfortable six-wicket win at Huntington in York Senior League Division 5A.
They would suffer disappointment on Sunday as their Hull City favoutites failed to make an automatic promotion spot in football's Championship final day, but the small ball was certainly to their liking in the first win of the season for the second team.
Jamie's medium-pace right arm saw him take five Huntington wickets for only 19 runs in eight overs as they were restricted to 113-8 in their 45 over innings and then Mark hit 68 as they chased down the total for the loss of four wickets on a long, hazy afternoon.
Batting was never going to be easy on a pitch that was green and damp. All the bowlers were economical, with Mark Hinchcliffe, returning to second team cricket after a season's absence, setting the tone with eight overs for only eight runs.
Scott Thorpe took three wickets as the Huntington innings had starts from several batsmen without any knocks of substance. Three for 28 in 11 overs, one of which was a catch - yes, you've guessed it - for Jamie Shipp. It was their family day.
After Goole's York Vale side had achieved a comfortable eight-wicket win a week earlier on the same ground, the second team set about chasing down a moderate total.
Although they lost three wickets for 54 with Eddie Oliver (12), Jake Mahone (1) and club captain Steve Foster for nine, Mark Shipp was in command at the other end and when joined by skipper Barry Clements, a partnership of 53 made sure there would be no surprises, although Shipp went for 68 in the 34th over having hit seven boundaries and a six.
Clements and Ben Earl saw Goole to the winning line and they are up and running after a first day disappointment.
