Traffic measures a waste of public money

Published on 1st May 2008 in Letters

Sir - I can only agree with the sentiments uttered last week in your Readers' Page regarding the wasteful spending on bollards, speed humps etc. in the Dunhill Road locality.

There is strong evidence that such schemes can cause significant delays to our emergency services, create traffic congestion and increase air pollution, yet our councillors still endorse such measures!

Unfortunately, the East Riding of Yorkshire Council are planning similar works in other areas of Goole such as road narrowing in Westfield Avenue and outside Parkside School, where they are creating a congestion-causing vehicle priority system. (Tailbacks on Western Road and vast increases in car exhaust fumes predicted here.)

Readers may be interested to know that this totally unnecessary expenditure by the ERYC comes to approximately £400,000. (Yes, the same ERYC who closed Pasture Road School to save money and have now increased Goole residents' council tax by an inflation-busting 4.9%).
