Sir - I have in the past been in support of the views of Paul Thompson, who regularly features in your Readers' Page. Unfortunately, his letter in last week's edition has made my blood boil. I didn't realise what a sexist attitude he's got.

My husband prefers shopping more than me but doesn't always know what we want or where it is located. On the occasions I have to supermarket shop without him I do not block the aisles with a trolley or take half an hour over choosing anything. If I do use my mobile phone it's to check the item is correct that I'm buying for my disabled mother-in-law (as we have to do her shopping every week), whilst controlling my two children and being six months pregnant.

Mr Thompson also implies that it's only men's money which keeps the tills ticking over. I can assure you that I have worked all my life since leaving school and I pay for half of everything in our household. May I suggest to Mr Thompson that he shops late at night, as this is when women wouldn't bother him as we're too busy finishing homework, ironing school uniform, making packed lunch and numerous other jobs we supposedly multi-task badly!

Sir - I can quite understand Mr Paul Thompson's point about 'men-only' shopping (Readers' Page, last week).

But I also feel the need to point out that, yes, I am guilty of packing my shopping after it has gone through the checkout (my husband taught me this) as the leading supermarkets and frozen food shops know they are supposed to ask if you need any assistance with packing.

And why should people feel rushed with the packing of their purchases? Also, I presume you mean by 'our money' the general public who keep these stores in profit?

Yes, I can agree that it would be a good idea for at least the leading supermarket to introduce a men-only checkout and I will forward this to the store concerned for you
