Sir - Five youngsters from Blacktoft, Yokefleet and Gilberdyke formed a group to 'do something for Lifestyle 2006'. But what to do? Lifestyle is a community-based project for youngsters backed mainly by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Humberside Police, with the aim to do something good for their community.

Blacktoft has its old school, which is now the only community hall in the parish (Faxfleet, Yokefleet, Blacktoft, Broomfleet Brickyard, Oxmardyke, Bellasize and Staddlethorpe). At the time of thinking what to do it was World Cup, 2006 with the flag of St George adorning everything that could possibly be adorned with a flag.

Let's put the two together - the old school and flags - and hold some craft days with a flag-design competition, culminating in a fund-raising flag day for the old school. The idea was taken up and the five youngsters ran with it, working very hard, very thoroughly, very politely and very tirelessly - all ably supported by their families.

The old school was cleaned, used for craft and games afternoons throughout the school summer holidays and the garden party was held in September at the Joiner's Shop, Blacktoft. The new vicar, the Rev Kate Burgess, very bravely judged the flag-design competition and a total of £350 was raised towards the old school refurbishment fund.

As their adult supervisor, I would like to praise the five youngsters: Jessica, Sophie, Alice, Dominic and Louis - for their hard work, thank their parents and families for their support and time, and thank all the kind people who donated bric a brac and tombola prizes and gave the youngsters their support at the garden party.

It just leaves one question: what next? How about the annual pumpkin competition and perhaps another craft day in the old school working on Hallowe'en masks made with papier mache and balloons.

The annual harvest festival auction for old St Clement's Church at Blacktoft was held at the Hope and Anchor on October 7. The former vicar, the Rev Steve Foster, was the auctioneer on the night and all proceeds went to the church's fabric fund.

My special thanks to the Lifestyle youngsters, and perhaps we will be working together again next year.

SUE NICHOLSON
