Traffic scheme doesn't go far enough

Published on 7th February 2008 in Letters

Sir - In response to your article last week 'Criticism over safety scheme proposal' [for the Western Road area in Goole]: My family and I reside approximately 15 doors away from Mr G. Higgins and his neighbours.

However, we have never received any consultation with regard to the proposed traffic calming. If we had, our reaction would have been much different. At times we have likened living along Western Road to the experience of living at the side of a 'drag strip'. On many occasions, whilst travelling at 30 mph, car drivers have actually overtaken us.

If the police were to set a speed trap at the corner of Cobbler Hill at night they would very quickly raise enough money to pay for the traffic calming. Instead, we believe that the proposed scheme doesn't go nearly far enough.

How many parents can confidently allow their children to cycle to school? We would suggest not many. Surely, along with traffic calming, the local authority should consider a cycle route, utilising the dog-dirt-ridden grass verges and not only keeping children safe, but also allowing them to achieve greater autonomy and undertake healthy exercise.

ERYC, please consider that this proposal would allow you to tick even more boxes under the 'Safe and Sound' and 'Happy and Healthy' sections of the newly-published Children's Plan. At the very least, consider extending the current proposals rather than reducing them
