Looking after our own
Published on 31st January 2008 in Letters
Sir - I have every sympathy with other parts of the world who are at war or are in poverty or in any kind of trouble, also with people living in our country whose origins are not here - but enough is enough. We can not afford to be the conscience and guardian of the whole planet and it is unfair on the silent majority in Britain who are being fleeced by our governments so that we are still a major player on the world stage.
It is unfair that pensioners are living in poverty in this country when they have given their working lives to this country. The money we give to other parts of the world or spend on bombs to destroy other parts of the world should be used to look after our own people in our own country. Our soldiers should be here to defend our country from invasion and if no one invades they could help out in the floods that look to be a permanent feature in this country.
We are a little island with no manufacturing industry to speak of and it seems like every poor person on the planet is heading this way. What is the point of so many people living in such a small place? I don't understand the logic. Britain must be able to say that it cannot sustain any more for just that reason, there is no room. I think every penny used to help foreign countries or people should be raised by a national charity, then everyone who wanted their hard-earned money used in other parts of the world would be able to contribute what they liked and then we would be able to look after our own.
What happened to commonsense in Britain, our own house is not in order, punishments don't fit crimes any more, celebrities are treated by the law as better than Mr Average (Leslie Ash). I could go on, but everyone knows of injustices and a return to common sense would go a long way to righting many wrongs.
