Can politicians be trusted?
Sir - In last week's issue local politicians pledged their support for firefighters and condemned the proposed loss of a whole-time fire appliance in Goole. Featured on page eight we had the Liberal Democrat mayor, two Labour councillors and prospective Conservative candidate Andrew Percy. I am certain their support is welcomed by both firefighters and community, but it was not made clear whether these were personally-held views or the views of the parties they represent.
Humberside Fire Authority is made up of elected council members - six Labour, seven Conservatives, Seven Lib Dems and one Independent. It is these councillors who voted in secret on this proposal. In April they will vote again - this time the majority will seal the fate of 24 whole-time posts at Goole fire station.
Whist I respect council protocols, it seems somewhat hypocritical for local politicians to pledge support whilst colleagues and members of their parties could actually be the very ones passing the proposals.
I consider it a matter of integrity for local politicians and fire authority members to provide we, the electorate, with clarity.
