Setting record straight

Published on 10th January 2008 in Letters

Sir - Once again Andrew Percy has delved into the realms of fiction in your recent Readers' Page (December, 28). For someone who aspires to work for the area he seems to have a tentative grip on the truth.

He wrongly claims that Goole MP Ian Cawsey voted on a Tory motion about Post Offices last January. Wrong! A cursory look at numerous websites and indeed Hansard proves Ian was in fact a teller (counting the votes not casting them). He also fails to mention that David Davis the MP that he works for didn't even bother to turn up! I know Mr Davis has a terrible 48 per cent voting record but so much for the local Tories commitment to the Post Office!

He then claims that the Government took TV licences from Post Offices despite this paper carrying a letter from Pippa Doubtfire (Head of Revenue Management, BBC TV Licensing) saying that it was in fact their decision and no one else's.

Finally, he says this Government is responsible for the fall in the number of people who claim their benefit or pension at a Post Office when in fact 80 per cent of recipients had made alternate arrangements before Labour was even elected in 1997! Though it is Labour who insist people should have the right to get their money at the Post Office if they want to.

I'm afraid Andrew Percy appears to be Andrew Porkies!
