Remembering the fallen

Published on 22nd November 2007 in Letters

Sir - It was nice to see the children of Rawcliffe Primary School paying their respect by laying a wreath at the monument of remembrance in Rawcliffe.

For the fourth year running I found most distressing and disrespectful the fact that Twin Rivers Parish Council did not send a representative or lay a wreath at the monument in Whitgift on Remembrance Sunday. How can we as adults teach our children about respect when our own elected dignitaries of our parish do not even show respect by attending the service or sending someone to lay a wreath on the parish's behalf?

The parish council recently gave one village which makes up Twin Rivers £150 for a neighbours' day, but could not buy a wreath to put on the monument for yet another year. Such a small price to pay when some lost their lives.

The only good thing is that at last the monument has been cleaned - and very well - but it now needs the names putting back on in paint so they can be read more clearly to show true respect to those who lost their lives.
