Sir - I have read with interest the articles published over the last two weeks in the Goole Times regarding the application Van Dijk Nurseries has submitted to the council for the resiting of greenhouses to land north of Cowslip Cottage, Newport. I feel I must respond on behalf of the large contingent of local residents who will be adversely affected and who are totally opposed to the development.

Your articles imply that, but for the council not following its own planning procedures, the application would have been granted. There may be some truth in this aspect of the story. However, there is massive local opposition to the development on what is open countryside on a designated greenfield site. It is extremely important that local people have an opportunity to influence planning decisions that will affect the quality of their lives. What has been published so far has not recorded our views or the level of objections that have been raised.

Local residents are relieved that the planners and councillors will be visiting the site so that they can see for themselves what a mistake the development would be. The area is a local amenity area used regularly by walkers and horse-riders. The site is on a Zone 3 high-risk flood plain. It has open unspoilt views to the Wolds. There is no infrastructure at the site and the proposed access road is wholly inadequate. Additionally the development is a departure from local planning policy.

We hope the Planning Committee will reject the application and do its upmost to protect the countryside and prevent the growth of commercial sprawl on greenfield sites.
