Crossing closure eased congestion

Published on 27th September 2007 in Letters

Sir - Did anyone else notice that when the recent maintenance work was being carried out on the level crossing which resulted in it being closed all weekend, there was a big improvement in the traffic congestion in Boothferry Road?

It was possible to walk across the road at the usual bottlenecks, Tesco's end of Pasture Road, and Mariners Street junctions, without dodging the usual long queues. Surely this should indicate to the town planners that a solution to Goole's traffic chaos lies with the permanent closure of the level crossing to road traffic.

Obviously alternative routes between the two ends of Boothferry Road would need upgrading, with ideally the provision of a road bridge when finances can be secured. Incidentally, I did not notice any reduction in the number of shoppers in town while work was going on, Tesco's car park was full on the Saturday afternoon.
