Demolition will hit housing market

Sir - Virtually every week the government releases a new missive urging councils involved in Pathfinder demolition projects to reconsider all options.

Our beloved deaf ERYC takes not a jot of notice. They took the decision to demolish Richard Cooper Street and Phoenix Street in 2004, and that's what they are going to do, irrespective of the huge increase in housing demand in Goole in those three years; and the detrimental effect it has on the lives of the remaining residents of the two streets and those living in surrounding streets.

Make no mistake: demolition of these houses will affect everyone in Goole. Without a steady supply of low-cost affordable housing, all prospective house buyers in Goole will begin to suffer; the removal of 117 quality terrace houses - effectively first-time-buyer homes - will have a knock-on effect on the housing market in Goole.

But what do the housing needs of the people of Goole mean to ERYC, as long as they stick by their decision? Even now, not one attempt has been made by ERYC to investigate renovation, so far as I can tell. Why should they worry? After all it's not their money they're spending - it's ours.
