Volunteers who make a difference

Published on 31st May 2007 in Letters

Sir - June 1 to 7 is National Volunteers' Week, so I am writing to congratulate all 136 past and present Home-Start volunteers. These kind and caring people give two hours of their time each week to visit young families who are finding life difficult. They strengthen parents' self-confidence and skills and enable them to give their children a happy and secure childhood. They also have lots of fun together! None of their work brings them wages, but they tell me their work is paid back many-fold by seeing families come through life's bad patches that lie in wait for us all.

In a world where people can forget to care for others, these Home-Start volunteers are putting the heart back into the community. Just 2 hours support per week can make a huge difference to young families and enables them to give their children the best possible start in life.

Home-Start volunteers are a precious resource; Goole and surrounding villages are very fortunate to have this superb service that families can access. We have 23 volunteers on our team at the moment and we are all keen to welcome more on board - the next prep course starts in September. A great big thank you to you all!
