Sir - Goole without the Amateurs? That's like serving eggs without bacon!

Come on, Vermuyden School, ERYC and Goole Town Council, get your acts together - if you need a producer, I can recommend a good one! On a serious note, as a former member of the GAODS I find the news distressing that they might soon be 'homeless' once again and the possibility that they might disband is unbelievable.

As an 'old girl' of Goole Grammar School (aka Vermuyden School) the news that they can see no advantage in including a large stage as part of their forthcoming refurbishments is beyond comprehension. Are performing arts no longer part of the modern curriculum? Are school drama groups, school orchestras and the days when the stage overflowed with students singing joyously about 'A policeman's lot' and the like now merely a part of this old dinosaur's past?

I am sure a large stage could be made available to groups other than the Amateurs and there must be numerous ways in which it could be used to great advantage to the community at large. I know we cannot let sentiment come in the way of progress, although my prehistoric way of thinking does sometimes question the word 'progress'. The Amateurs have entertained the townsfolk of Goole since 1906 - surely they deserve some consideration.

Perhaps the old 'Cosy Carlton' would make a suitable venue? But let us not forget, this is The Amateurs we are talking about and so, right now, they may 'need a little Christmas'. I guess they will do what they always do: "put on their Sunday clothes" and "open a new window" and with Auntie Mame at their helm, who's gonna "rain on their parade?" Don't even think about it!
