Sir - The problem of rubbish has been in the news of late. Locally in some areas the streets are a disgrace, the waste land off Alexandra Street in Goole still looks a mess, even though most of the litter has been removed.

I have been in Selby and Thorne recently and both are a lot cleaner than Goole which, considering the council tax rates in our area, is a bit of a kick in the teeth for the residents of Goole. The back lanes of Poets Corner are another litter blackspot which needs keeping on top of as the non-indigenous residents don't seem to have much pride in our town.

In my opinion the street-cleaning machines are a waste of time as they can't get near the kerb because of parked cars. It would be a lot easier to sweep it by hand, and possibly cheaper. Wheely-bin collections are barely adequate as they are, without the daft idea that collecting them fortnightly would reduce the amount of rubbish we throw away.

Fly-tipping would become a bigger problem and areas I mentioned previously would get worse. Less packaging would be a better solution and converting power stations to burn rubbish might be an answer.
