Is there a future for council?
Published on 5th April 2007 in Letters
Sir - Once again questions are raised in your newspaper concerning the suitability of some of our town councillors in making vital decisions on behalf of the people of Goole (Letter, P. Thompson, 'Hang your heads in shame', March 29) and even as to whether we actually need a town council (Letter, P. Murphy, 'Do we need Town Council?', March 29).
Goole Town Council has spent millions of pounds of ratepayers' money over the years and I, for one, can't see what benefits we have received to justify such a large expenditure. We are informed that the council now has a staff of 30, so who is empire-building? We have councillors arguing between themselves in the local press; even the clerk to the council has entered the political debate.
Yes, I agree with Pat Murphy, the people of Goole 'should find a way of getting rid of Goole Town Council' - I would ask the Goole Times to take the initiative to seek the opinions of the people of Goole on this important issue.
