Sports and leisure complex for school?
Published on 29th March 2007 in Letters
Sir – I would like to inquire through your pages what the plans are for the old Bartholomew Middle School, which is now a college and its field which once was the best-tended playing field in Goole? It appears to me that when the new Vermuyden School is finished that the Bartholomew buildings may well end up empty.
As an old pupil of Bartholomew I recall that it had two large halls and a gymnasium. Now I would like to know why it shouldn't be turned into a sports and leisure complex for all ages. I estimate that there are 15 adult Sunday league football teams, four adult Saturday teams, three junior boys' football clubs all with numerous teams, Goole Town Girls have numerous teams and Goole Town WFC. And that's just football!
If you carry on then there's Goole Ladies' netball, Butterfly Dance, numerous other dance schools and last but not least a whole army of crown green bowls players who would love an indoor arena.
But, alas, we live in Goole so it will never happen. Howden and Selby get astro-turf arenas and indoor bowls but in Goole, with the highest council tax, we will probably just sell it off to builders. More heritage gone.
Now, councillors, add up all the people that would use such a centre and count the votes - it's a lot more than use The Gate, I can tell you!
