'Terrible state' of area

Published on 1st March 2007 in Letters

Sir - Surely it is about time something was done about the terrible state of the Shuffleton area.

People living in this area should be awarded a reduction on their council tax owing to the fact that their properties are being devalued because of the terrible condition of the surroundings.

Anyone wishing to sell their property would find it difficult to find a buyer who would even consider living in such a derelict environment. How long before Phoenix Street and Richard Cooper Street are sorted out? What is causing the delay? It is vital that things should now be going ahead and the problem should be sorted as soon as possible.

The area behind the Burlington public house is a disgrace and would not be tolerated in any other country. The council should insist on the land being cleaned up by the owners, otherwise it should be given a compulsory purchase order so that the council can organise ways to improve the area.

People visiting houses in Alexandra Street must think they are entering a ghetto. I feel ashamed to invite people to visit as they always comment on the terrible state of the street. Also, people living opposite the rubbish must feel depressed at the view every time they come out of their homes.

People living in such surroundings have a right to demand improvements.
