Energy saving the answer
Published on 22nd February 2007 in Letters
Sir - I was pleased to read of the commitment by East Riding of Yorkshire Council to play their part in promoting actions to reduce greenhouse gases, albeit somewhat late in general national awareness but certainly just in time for the May local authority elections.
It is significant that the weight of effort has now shifted towards consumer ability to make savings in the use of electricity, rather than the proven inefficiency of wind turbine installations, which depend upon high electricity charges for their economic viability. This has been our message for the past two years and local parish councils think likewise.
If all consumers were to act now, as nationally recommended, there would be an IMMEDIATE reduction in carbon emissions of 12 per cent and this is badly needed as time has run out for lengthy talking and posturing on the world stage, and for the construction of central energy plants like wind farms and nuclear power stations.
Regrettably however, no politician has yet dared to utter the unspeakable, that all the taxpayers' money has been spent in vain whilst China opens a new polluting power station every week and each day's aviation negates one wind turbine.
