Street plans are 'out -of-control sham'

Published on 11th January 2007 in Letters

Sir - I am proud to be an employee of ERYC but get disheartened by criticism that is directed to embrace the whole Authority. ERYC is an institution with vast responsibilities, but it is the individuals who carry out tasks that prove whether ERYC is a valued institution or not.

At times I wonder if colleagues are just building their own empires, or do they realise they are working for better communities. We still await any form of proposal for Richard Cooper Street and Phoenix Street in Goole and as there are no planning applications for approval, nor any groundwork for compulsory purchase orders completed, the local community can look forward to at least another year of inactivity.

To me the whole project is an out-of-control sham, haemorrhaging money at a rate that would turn a fire engine pale. I believe the £50,000 spent on consultants was just a distraction tactic, and that there most certainly will be no new development with nice little green areas.

I believe the plan is to get everyone out and then sell the site to a developer who will pay the most and bail certain departments out of their abysmal financial situation. The poor ratepayers will be even poorer soon as once again a double inflation rise will be on their rate demands. Remember, ERYC is your authority and it is your right to complain.
