We need jobs at Oakhill site
Published on 21st December 2006 in Letters
Sir - I seem to remember somewhere in the proposals for the glass factory by Yorkshire Forward was an access road to Oakhill country park and a few parking spaces. It never happened because there is no profit in it.
Then some guy wanted to make a commercial venture from the pond. If this had been allowed to happen we would now have access for all to the area. Misguided do-gooders ruined that idea through scaremongering about vandalism and wildlife abuse. If what they said was true, what on earth do the friends of Oakhill get up to on their nature walks, as this guy was said to have decimated the area?
In truth, all he did was clear a few spots so anglers could get near the pond. Kester Dean's pie-in-the-sky idea about a visitor centre is such a waste of money. I am pretty sure no one will be travelling far to learn about the four great crested newts recently rescued in the area. As nice as it is, Oakhill is of very little significance in the great scheme of things and a visitor centre would be the biggest white elephant on the planet.
Mr Dean apparently does not want immigrant workers at the proposed Tesco warehouse - I am afraid the EU and the Labour party might have something to say about that. We need the jobs provided by big companies such as Tesco, so we need to let them have planning permission for this warehouse.
We want (not need) access to Oakhill - maybe the Council, Yorkshire Forward and Tesco could somehow work together to that end.
