Goole needs jobs, not wildlife

Published on 14th December 2006 in Letters

Sir - Looking at the response in the local papers, it would appear not many people agree with Cllr Kester Dean's interpretation of what is required for the people of Goole.

It would seem that every time someone comes up with an idea to create jobs in the Goole area, Mr Dean is against it. In my view he is all for wasting the ratepayers' money, but not for allowing the unemployed to become employed. The idea of buying Potter Grange for a visitor centre is probably one of the worst ideas he has come up with. Where all these visitors are coming from is anybody's guess.

If Mr Dean thinks this is a viable proposition then maybe he, with a few other like-minded entrepreneurs should form a company, and then they can have all the profits/losses, instead of the ratepayers of Goole baling them out once again. No wonder Goole has the highest precept in the area.

Having gone to a meeting that was advertised as a public meeting, I was surprised to find only a handful of people there, and no one from either the ERYC Planning department or Tesco. You would have thought that whoever organised the meeting would have been ensured they were the first to be invited, especially if there were various points you were not happy with. It just shows how good their organisational skills are.

I am sure I do not only speak for myself when I say we are all interested in the environment and the ecology of the area; wildlife is very adaptable as has been proven over hundreds of years. I would agree that occasionally it needs a helping hand, but not at the expense of throwing away thousands of jobs.

Finally, it has taken years and years to get an industrial programme like this, because it would seem we have had too many councillors in the past like Mr Dean, who know how to spend money they have never been involved in creating, and have no idea or expertise in business matters.
