Bedroom destroyed in blaze

Published on 18th December 2008 in News

A bedroom went up in flames after radiated heat from an electric fire set fire to bed linen.

The fire spread to the rest of the bed and caused extensive damage to the first-floor bedroom.

The incident happened at a terraced house on Percy Street in Old Goole at about 3.45pm on Saturday, December 14.

There were no casualties and, according to the fire service, no one was inside the house when firefighters arrived.

A fitted smoke alarm had activated as soon as the fire erupted.

Firefighters put the blaze out using a high-power jet and an industrial fan to clear the smoke.

Smoke residue from the fire slightly affected the next-door property.

Glenn Ramsden, of Humberside Fire & Rescue Service, said the fire should serve as a warning to people who use electrical appliances to heat their homes.

"It is very important that everyone is particularly careful when using electrical appliances in the home," he said.

"If these are for heating, then it is essential that they are kept away from anything that may catch fire from the heat. Remember always to leave plenty of space around portable heaters."

He added: "Thankfully, the home was fitted with smoke alarms and they did activate as a result of the fire. Had this been during the night that might have been a life-saver."
