Talent on view

Published on 2nd October 2008 in Ents

Strange reality music presents '3 In The Round' at The Gate Theatre, Goole on Saturday, October 4.

Three of Yorkshire's most talented and engaging singer-songwriters on stage together, swapping songs, stories and experiences.

Joe Solo has lived a rich and varied musical life, from hitch-hiking around Europe during the late 80s singing songs by the likes of Christy Moore, Steve Earle and Bob Dylan, to touring the UK for ten years as frontman for Hull's pop-punk icons Lithium Joe.

At just 22, Holly Taymar is one of the North's most promising singer/songwriters.

Combining elements of folk and jazz, Holly's effortless voice and stylised finger-picked guitar makes her a rare treat to see live. David Ward Maclean has in the past guested for John Martyn, Jack Bruce and John James, and in recent times Martin Carthy, Edwina Hayes and Jethro Tull.

The gig came about from an idea of David, who has already organised and run nights on a similar theme in York.

Three performers onstage thoughout, playing a song and then 'passing it on', ensuring constant entertainment and momentum throughout the show.

The trio (David, Joe and Holly) will also perform some of their songs together, bringing a fresh new twist to the arrangements which are usually performed solo.

The artists shared a common link in that they had all performed at The Acoustic Night at The Bell and Crown in Snaith, where they met sound engineer/promoter Chris Miley of strangerealitymusic. When David suggested the idea of a collaborative show, and asked Chris to promote it, The Gate Theatre in Goole was an obvious choice.

An old mission hall with a capacity of 80, excellent sound and lighting facilities (and a bar!) seemed like a perfect setting for such an intimate performance.

The venue has in the past hosted such legendary names as John Otway, Martin Taylor, Gordon Giltrap, Pete Best, Dennis Rollins and Chumbawamba, and hopes to attract even bigger names from next year, when they will relocate to a larger and more central purpose-built venue (which will also incorporate cinema and workshop facilities, meeting rooms and a separate bar and restaurant).

The three performers had all met previously, but were only all in the same room for the first time on Sunday, August 31, when they all appeared at the final night of Snaithfest at The Bell and Crown.

Tickets are £6 and £4. Call 01405 763652 (daytime) or 01405 720219 (showtime). Alternatively visit www.thegategoole.com
