Mixed times for Atkins

Published on 14th August 2008 in Ents

Local rider Gareth Atkins returned home after a turbulent weekend of racing at Donnington Park.

Gareth participated in two races as part of his quest to become the CB500 club champion.

"We all knew too well that the first race wasn't going to be an easy one by any means as the weather was certainly against us, after qualifying in fifth position out of 25 racers.

"I knew I was going to have to put up a good fight. Unfortunately as the race began so did the crashes luckily no one was seriously injured and that includes myself as I unfortunately became one of the six racers who were unable to finish the race.

"I knew the bike had some damage but with a bit of work I knew I was going to be able to make the second race. As the ground was drying it was time to make the decision whether we went out on wet or dry tyres, fortunately I opted for dry tyres, which turned out to be the best option.

"It was a very close run race, with positions changing by the second. As the chequered flag was waved I finished in fourth position only a tyre's thickness off third. I'd like to thank my family and friends for all the support again this weekend."

Unfortunately, Gareth will not be attending the next two rounds of the championship due to the financial pressures and no sponsorship deals. But if anyone would like sponsor Gareth - please contact him on 07929 006993.
