Wet weather fails to dampen send off for popular player

A popular member of Goole Town Cricket Club bade farewell to the club - for now, at least - and in familiar fashion on Saturday as he watched the rain cascade down on his final game against Sessay at Westfield.
Fast medium bowler Steve Hicks has taken up a post in London, and after 14 seasons at Westfield as boy and man, his swan song turned into a damp squib, with the game abandoned.
Steve, who joined the club as an eight-year-old under the guidance of Steve Foster, has helped out with coaching duties in the last few years where he also studied and played cricket at Oxford University.
He told the Goole Times that he has enjoyed his time with the club, and has made many friends on and off the field.
Although known for his bowling exploits, Steve has also packed a punch with the bat on many occasions.
Steve hopes to get back into cricket with a club he has located close to his new home, but will keep in touch with friends and colleagues who game him a send-off last Saturday evening. (31-08-23 SU)
