Great live music
By Charis Scott-Holm
With its free function room and rock n roll regulars, The Goods Office has become Goole's new home of live music, showcasing some fantastic live bands.
That said, I haven't enjoyed any band so far this year as much as I enjoyed Velvet Star's live performance last Saturday. The 'Dirty Girl' single launch party was an event designed to celebrate and promote the band's single release on iTunes on the May 31. Featuring three very proper rock bands, the night was kicked off by local Indie band Recruitment 46.
Unfortunately for me, I missed the band, but from many reports I heard they played a stellar set, with mostly original material and fantastic live talent. From the songs featured on the band's Myspace page I am sorry to have missed their performance. Still, I tottered down in my heels in time to catch the next performer, rock band Slash Vegas.
Hailing from around Yorkshire and as close as Selby, Slash Vegas brought a real sense of fun to proceedings and put on a fantastic show. Influenced by the likes of Guns 'n' Roses, the band brought 80s riffs with tongue-in-cheek lyrics played with real gusto.
Lead singer Ginna shone, with entertaining mid-set banter and a stage manner akin to the punk greats. Not taking themselves too seriously at all, the band finished with a reworked Elvis cover, yup you guessed it, 'Viva Slash Vegas'. Great fun.
By the time Velvet Star came to the stage the room had filled up substantially, as even the smokers came in to check out the band. Apart from a mid-set amp incident, they played a flawless set with highlights including the opener "Give In To Me", the single "Dirty Girl" and Sex Pistols/Velvet Revolver cover of "Bodies".
Another highlight was the guitar wizardry of guitarist Sam, who at one point used an actual beer bottle for a bottle neck!
All of the musicians and especially lead singer Danny give the performance their all despite the sweltering on-stage heat to provide an amazing finish to the night. If you like your rock a little bit dirty, very energetic, and played by talented musicians, then download a 'Velvet Star' song, join their Myspace web page or visit a live show, and give some real support to a local band who are capable of far bigger things.
