Ken Dodd review
by Ray Clark
Octogenarian comic legend Ken Dodd took to the stage of the York Opera House banging The Great Drum of Knotty Ash with all the verve and energy of a man half his age. Three hours later, at a point when most comedians would be saying goodnight to the audience, Ken Dodd said he would see them after the interval.
The second half of the show continued for another two hours in much the same hilarious tradition as the first, when the comedian tackled technology and the use of mobile phones, as well as the subject of love and marriage. With excellent audience interaction, the performance was tireless and the timing perfectly executed.
The show was interspersed with a troupe of dancing children performing as The Diddymen, a piano vocalist, and Britain's leading female trumpet player, Joan Hinde. In short, York and its residents were treated to an evening of clean, wholesome "good old days" variety style entertainment, something that is sadly lacking among today's generation of new age comedians.
My only reservation was whether or not I could actually continue laughing for a six-hour show, but in the hands of a seasoned performer with Ken Dodd's experience, it wasn't a problem.
