A touch of the Chinese

Selby Town Hall welcomes British-born Chinese violinists and composers CHi2 to the venue on May 17 as they present a dynamic, modern interpretation of Beijing Opera with a unique take on the tale of the Monkey King.

Liz and Sarah Liew of CHi2 have a prestigious history touring and playing with some of modern music's biggest names, including Moby, Boy George, Goldfrapp, Nelly Furtado and Gnarls Barkley.

They have created an edgy musical cocktail of traditional and modern sounds, fusing together acoustic and electric instruments, film, digital media and one of the world's most ancient art forms with a unique contemporary twist, to create a stunning show that bursts with colour and vibrancy.

Monkey King draws on a well-loved story - the sixteenth century classic Chinese folk epic, Monkey: Journey To The West, which many will know best through the kitsch 70s television series 'Monkey'. 

The mixed media show has been four years in the making and was shot, in part, on location in Beijing. This select tour is part of the China Now season and follows a sell-out London launch show in December.

The score was written by award-winning composer Tom E. Morrison who has worked for well-known movie figures such as Ken Loach, Jackie Chan, Rowan Atkinson and William H. Macey among others.

The live show features exotic Chinese instruments, drums and percussion, with costumes by MaoCouture and a stunning light show by Niall Hannell, complemented by the filmic interpretation of the storyline by filmmakers Michele Rosaus and Steve Teers.

The drama, both aurally and visually, is enhanced by actor Tom Wu, whose film appearances include Revolver, Belly of the Beast, Shanghai Knights and Rogue Trader, as he employs spoken word, narration and his expertise in martial arts to convey the thrill-seeking adventures of the storyline.

Chris Jones, Town Council arts officer, said: "This is one of the most ambitious shows we have ever hosted at the Town Hall.

"Monkey King has only been performed at a very small number of venues around the country since its sell out debut in London. We are incredibly lucky to be hosting such an exciting event - I can't recommend it highly enough!"
