Jazzing it up

A jazz act swings into Howden on Saturday.
Singer and pianist Daryl Sherman is a mainstay of Manhattan nightlife. Most afternoons, she can be found seated at Cole Porter's vintage Steinway performing in front of international visitors and dignitaries in the Waldorf Astoria's famed Cocktail Terrace.
"You never know who is going to show up," Daryl said. "Celebrities like Bette Midler, Meryl Streep, cabaret queen Julie Wilson, the president of Mexico, Condoleeza Rice, President Clinton. Even the Dalai Lama has mingled in our Cocktail Lounge. The only thing I could think to play for him was Hello, Dolly."
In the evenings, Daryl can often be found performing at old Sinatra hangouts such as Jilly's or Jimmy Weston's, where she is also a regular favourite. Indeed, there is hardly a jazz joint, supper club or hotel in Manhattan that Daryl has missed.
Equally at home in the worlds of jazz and cabaret, her many recordings have received high critical praise.
Daryl's many recordings clearly illustrate the immaculate pitch and mobility of her voice and her expertise as a pianist. This is Daryl's first visit to Howden and she is looking forward to it.
Daryl plays at 8pm at the Shire Hall on Saturday, March 15. Tickets cost £10 and are available from Touchwood Homecare, 2 Market Place, Howden on 01430 431535 or Dt's Rock Shop, Pasture Road, Goole on 01405 767282. (06-03-0-5 SU)
