Music at The Gate

A guitarist with 35 years of experience comes to The Gate on Saturday.
Pete Smith is a versatile and accomplished musician and jazz, blues, folk, ragtime, calypso, baroque and bluegrass all get the treatment of his blistering finger style technique and are used as playgrounds for his lightening improvisational skills.
Said to be among the cream of UK guitarists, he has gained a national reputation not only as a phenomenal player but as a raconteur and story teller.
Pete said: "It was the mid 70s when I discovered the English school of folk guitarists such as Nic Jones, Martin Carthy, John Renbourne and Gordon Giltrap. The mid 80s saw me move to Scotland where I started to study the guitar seriously and, quite by accident, discovered jazz. The dark winter days were spent trying to figure out the bewildering finger styles of Joe Pass and Martin Taylor.
"When it comes to guitars I dread to think how many I've actually owned over the years, from my first Japanese 'cheese grater' in the 1970s to my current 'desert island' Taylor.
Pete Smith will be at The Gate on Saturday, February 23 at 8pm. Tickets cost £7 (£5 for concessions) and are available from Goole Town Council, on the door, by calling 01405 763652 or online at www. digyorkshire.com
