Bush, rabbits and dance set for York
Drama, laughter, dance, a hedgehog and a rabbit all feature in York Theatre Royal's line-up for 2008.
Highlights include the world premiere of the York Theatre Royal production of Patient No 1, a new play about George Bush by acclaimed American playwright, Donald Freed.
There are also new productions of Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men In a Boat and Robert Bolt's A Man for all Seasons, plus Philip Meek's hilarious tale of the demise of a pantomime dame - Twinkle, Little Star.
The season kicks off with the return of English Touring Theatre who bring their latest production, Uncle Vanya (March 4 to 8), directed by Sir Peter Hall. Set in 1890s Russia, Uncle Vanya uncovers the desperate longing, unrequited love and bitter frustrations that surface when an ageing professor and his young wife return home.
Darkly comic, deeply touching and rich in language and emotion, Chekhov's masterpiece is a passionate and often very funny exploration of love, desire and loss. The production features Ronald Pickup, Neil Pearson and Nicholas Le Prevost.
March will also see the return of two companies who will be familiar to audiences at York Theatre Royal.
Hull Truck Theatre makes a comeback to the theatre with John Godber's hilarious tale of the trials and tribulations of moving in Our House (March 11 to 15).
After their success with Looking for JJ, Pilot Theatre make a welcome return to the main house with the stage version of Raymond Briggs' much loved children's tale, Fungus the Bogeyman (March 18 to 22).
Finally, direct from the West End and prior to Broadway, comes Alfred Hitchcock's classic spy thriller The 39 Steps (March 25 to 29), brilliantly and hilariously recreated as the smash hit Olivier Award Winning Best New Comedy.
After their successful co-production last year of African Snow, York Theatre Royal and Riding Lights Theatre Company are set to join forces again to stage Jerome K. Jerome's classic comedy, Three Men in a Boat (April 4 to 26).
Adapted and directed for the stage by Riding Lights Theatre Company's artistic director Paul Burbridge, Jerome's classic comedy comes roaring to life in a delightfully accident-packed evening as three men take a boat trip up the Thames in 1889 as a series of hilarious mishaps and ineptitudes result in a journey they will never forget.
Dance features strongly in the new season at York Theatre Royal with the return of Birmingham Royal Ballet (May 9 to 10), accompanied by Royal Ballet Sinfonia, performing an innovative programme of ballets from across the world, giving audiences a perfect introduction to classical dance.
Other dance events in the main house include first time visits from Actors of Dionysus with Bacchic (May 6), English Folk powerhouse The Demon Barber Show (May 7) , Jonathan Lunn Dance Company with Reading Room (May 28 to 29) and the critically acclaimed aerial theatre company, Ockham's Razor (May 30-31).
For younger audiences there is a York Theatre Royal production of Rabbit and Hedgehog in The Birthday Presents and Rabbit's Wish (May 22 to June 7).
This humorous and heart-warming 45 minute show is set to enchant children and adults alike, and is directed by York Theatre Royal's associate director, Juliet Forster.
York Theatre Royal's new brochure is out now and contains details of all the season's productions.
