Magic and more planned for The Gate
Published on 3rd January 2008 in Ents
As Christmas fades to a distant memory, The Gate has some top-class entertainment lined up for people - something to look forward to over the coming months.
The spring season kicks off on January 19 with Ian Keable and 'Conjuring Up Comedy' - a very funny one-man comedy and magic show. Find out how he made the transition from accountant to world-travelled magical comedian with a mixture of anecdotes, jokes, magic and mind reading.
Keeping with the magic theme, The Gate welcomes back Magic Carpet Theatre during half term. They will be running a magic workshop for the over eights before performing their latest production, The Wizard of Castle Magic.
Meanwhile, Harry Potter fans will love The Unauthorised Harry Experience.
Sit back and watch all seven books of the young wizard condensed into 60 minutes by Dan and Jeff, who are best known for their storytelling on Blue Peter. Even if you're not a fan, you'll love the game of Quidditch!
The Gate's hot ticket of the season is Martin Stephenson, a supremely gifted singer, songwriter, musician and performer, whose career in music stretches back almost 20 years.
He is perhaps most famous for performing with The Daintees in the early 80s. He is a great raconteur, guitar player, a top notch songwriter and an avid collector of matchboxes - a memorable evening is on the cards.
Other music includes the sought-after musician Dave Harris (ex NYJO member) with Djangology; Pete Smith, rated as being among the cream of UK guitarists; and the English Acoustic Collective.
A minor coup for The Gate is bringing Sheffield Theatres to town. Handful of Henna is a story inspired by original stories by Muslim women.
Suitable for family audiences (over tens), this excellent piece of theatre identifies universal truths and experiences that we can all share.
With this year being a leap year, The Gate thought it appropriate to put on a dance show for February 29. Prize-winning choreographer Nina Rajarani presents her male-dominated company, Srishti, with their new show, Play Ball. The triple bill of dance pieces shows off what the lads do when at work, at play and in love.
The Gate's regular youth programme also continues, with Electric Youth Theatre on Tuesday nights and Vocalise singing group on Thursday nights, beginning the week of January 14
Tickets for all events are available from Goole Town Council, Gladstone Terrace or via www.digyorkshire.com.
The daytime box office can be contacted on 01405 763652, and the showtime office on 01405 720219 (one hour before performance).
