The beauty and the grotesque in Selby
Published on 4th October 2007 in Ents
Contemporary dance and theatre makes a welcome return to Selby on October 13 as award-winning Leeds collective Instant Dissidence bring their new show to the town hall.
The exhilarating and widely celebrated White Out Conditions promises to seduce, move, amuse, and inspire.
Under the artistic direction of Rita Marcalo it will take the spectator through a journey of exuberating theatrical tension, astonishing visual designs and intricately choreographed movement, distorting reality along the way, as visual scenarios move in and out of sight, sparking strong emotional responses.
The performance is driven by an interest in the notions of the beautiful and the grotesque.
By creating images playing on the 'excess of beauty' and images highlighting the 'beauty in the grotesque', the work does away with the commonsense binary opposition between the two notions, and instead suggests a continuum between them.
Chris Jones, town council arts officer, said: "Instant Dissidence are one of the most highly regarding contemporary dance and theatre groups in the country and it's great that they have agreed to return to Selby.
"We are especially pleased to be able to offer a workshop from one of the leading artists in the UK. Don't let this unique opportunity to get involved pass you by - come along and have a go."
Tickets, priced £6.50 in advance or £8.50 on the door, are available by calling 01757 213758 (dial 0) or by visiting www.selbytownhall.co.uk
Instant Dissidence are also offering anyone over the age of 16 the opportunity to take part in a free workshop introducing techniques in physical theatre, contemporary dance and movement on the morning of the show.
The session runs from 10.30am to 12 noon and will be led by company director and Lisa Ullman Award winner, Rita Marcalo, whose work has been toured across the UK and Europe and who featured in the 2003 dance film Remember To Forget.
Anyone wishing to take part should register by calling 01757 708449.
